Catoira lies on the estuary of the Ulla River and was historically fortified by the Torres del Oeste, which defended against Viking incursions. Galician volunteers founded the modern festival in 1960 to commemorate those raids, combining local folklore with historical homage. Today it is a proud regional tradition that showcases Galician culture through music, crafts, and storytelling.
