Carnival of Torla / O Carnabal

Carnaval de Torla

Torla-Ordesa, Spain

Dates to be announcedDates pending

A traditional Pyrenean Carnival in Torla-Ordesa centered on O Carnabal, a horned, wild, scapegoat-like figure dressed in sackcloth and goatskins wearing two pairs of goat horns, who embodies the community's accumulated sins and misfortunes. He is captured by O Tenedor, a hunter/order figure who parades him through town on a rope, brings him to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento for public judgment and trial (accused of all the year's ills), and executes him with a shotgun blast. The body is then dragged to the cemetery. A traditional Romance poem in Central Aragonese is recited during the event. The carnival was suppressed during the Franco dictatorship (officially prohibited in 1937) and was revived by local youth in February 1987, with the definitive revival in February 1989.
