Each year, the Belgian town of Binche holds a carnival so old and treasured it is honored by UNESCO. On the big day, the Gilles, costumed in bright wool and padded with straw, dance through the streets and toss oranges to the crowd for good luck, in one of Europe's most singular folk traditions.
