Each year before Lent, the southern city of Maastricht and its neighbors give themselves over to Vastelaovend, a week of costumes, masks, and round-the-clock street parties. A Prince Carnival is crowned to reign over the fun, and float parades and brass bands fill the squares in Limburg's biggest celebration.
