Each year on the last Sunday of April, the citizens of Appenzell Innerrhoden gather in the village square for the Landsgemeinde, one of the world's last open-air assemblies. Dressed in tradition, they elect officials and pass laws with a show of hands, in a centuries-old rite of direct democracy carried on in the open air.
