Each September, the Spanish town of Elche de la Sierra, known as the cradle of the running of the bulls, fills its streets with daily encierros. For centuries, Elche de la Sierra has celebrated its patron saints with festivities in mid-September. The bull runs originated as part of these devotionals, with villagers traditionally using the animals from local ranches to generate excitement around the solemn occasions. The result is a blend of piety (Virgin processions) and peasant bravura (cattle runs) unique to the Sierra del Segura.
A mix of religious procession and rough bull-running. Visitors should behave respectfully during Mass and processions. In the morning runs, they should refrain from interfering and follow local safety guidance.
