Buergbrennen zu Stroossen
Strassen, Luxembourg
Each first Sunday of Lent, the town of Strassen raises a great decorated Buerg for the Buergbrennen. The local scouts and guides build the pyre and set it ablaze to chase away winter, in a celebration of the widespread Luxembourgish spring-bonfire custom and its pagan roots.
The Buergbrennen tradition is widespread across Luxembourg and has pagan roots, symbolizing the triumph of spring over winter. In Strassen, this autumn tradition is maintained by the Kiewerlecken scout group, and it brings together people of the commune after the Carnival season. The practice involves collecting wood by local clubs in January and building the bonfire on-site during the day. The event reinforces neighborhood bonds and local folklore.
Respect the local tradition: observe quietly during the procession, stay behind safety barriers by the fire, and show respect when the bonfire is lit.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
