Botarga of Beleña de Sorbe (Candlemas Cencerrada & Orange Blessing)

Botarga de las Candelas

Beleña de Sorbe, Spain

Feb 1 - 2, 2026ExpectedSource

Each Candlemas, the village of Beleña de Sorbe celebrates with its Botarga. A bonfire and a loud cencerrada of bells open the eve, and the masked Botarga leads an orange blessing on the day, in a celebration of a midwinter masked-character tradition rooted in rural Guadalajara.

How we decide

Key moments

Botarga Street Procession (Alms & Orange Blessing)

Spectators can walk with the Botarga, who collects donations using a castanet and playfully taps women with an orange or club for luck. The event is interactive (children often chase behind) but visitors should be respectful of traditions.

Morning

Candlemas Mass & Procession

Attend the mass (often in local dialect and Spanish) and step outside to watch the Botarga join the formal Candlemas procession. Photography inside the church is restricted; visitors should maintain decorum during the service.

Morning

La Caridad (Anise Bread, Tostones & Wine Sharing)

Visitors can watch two elaborately costumed Botargas jump and dance through the village, playfully tapping children and offering citrus oranges as a blessing, accompanied by traditional chants.
