St. Anastasia Island has a 19th-century monastery historically associated with healing and quarantined lepers. The Enyovden festival there revives pre-Christian St. John’s Day traditions of blessing herbs and the sea, symbolically 'cleansing' through fire and water rituals. The festival highlights the pagan roots of this holiday in a coastal setting unique to Burgas.
