Every August, Bilbao lets loose for Aste Nagusia, its eight-day Great Week and the biggest party of the year. Music, fireworks, street food, and Basque traditions take over the city day and night, in a festival joyfully revived in 1978 after years of being banned.
Revived in 1978 after a Franco-era ban, Aste Nagusia has links to mid-19th century festivities but was reborn as a fortnight of strictly Basque-inflected culture. Named by the fictional character Marijaia, it emphasizes popular participation through music houses (txosnas), fairground attractions, and traditional communal games. It highlights Bilbao’s local identity and solidarity, drawing citizens to the streets every evening.
Fiesta atmosphere; respect performers and stalls. Night displays may get loud; use ear protection if needed. Minors must be supervised, especially near open fires at skewering stands.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.

Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
