La Bénichon began as a religious blessing of the church’s harvest (from Latin *benedictio*) but broke away from its strictly religious context and became a popular folk festival marking the end of the alpine grazing season and the return of cattle. Today it emphasizes gastronomy: each community serves the traditional Bénichon menu and showcases local crafts and music.
