Each year, the town of Ilomantsi fills with the buzz of chainsaws for its Bear Festival. Woodcarvers sculpt bears and other Karelian motifs from raw timber, in a celebration of the bear, the sacred forest king of Karelian tradition, and the nature and folklore of the region.
