At Leipzig's Thomaskirche, the church where Johann Sebastian Bach worked for nearly thirty years, his music still rings out as part of regular worship. On many weekends a choir and orchestra perform the cantatas Bach wrote for these very services, almost exactly where he first led them.

The Thomaskirche has been a center of Leipzig’s music and religious life since the Late Gothic period. After the Reformation, church music became municipal, and by Bach’s time (1723–50), cantata composition for services was highly developed. The Thomanerchor, established centuries earlier, performed Bach’s works as part of worship. This tradition of combining liturgical worship and Bach’s music remains a defining element of Leipzig’s identity.
This is an active religious service. Dress modestly and behave quietly. Participate reverently (singing hymns is welcome) without disrupting worship.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
