Each Carnival, the village of Vamvakofyto near Serres fills with the masked Babougera. Costumed in rags and cowbells, the figures parade to chase away evil spirits, in a celebration noted as one of Greece's oldest carnivals, with roots in the ancient winter customs of the countryside.
