Twice a year, around Easter and again in late summer, the Bavarian city of Augsburg throws the Plärrer, one of the region's biggest funfairs. Carnival rides, brass bands, and big beer tents draw over a million visitors, in a noisy, cheerful tradition grown from the city's medieval markets.
