Each September, the Greek island of Spetses commemorates its 1822 naval victory over the Ottoman fleet with the Armata festival. A week of cultural and religious events builds to the dramatic burning of a mock enemy ship in the harbor, lit up by fireworks, in a fiery tribute to the island's heroes of the war for independence.
