Öberefahre

The Öberefahre is the Appenzeller spring Alpfahrt, when farming families drive cattle, goats, and equipment from the valley up to summer alpine pastures in the Alpstein. The procession is led by Appenzeller goats with children at the reins, followed by decorated cattle wearing three tuned Senntumsschellen (bells), Sennen in festive Volltracht carrying the carved Fahreimer, the Lediwagen loaded with dairy equipment, Rugguussele (wordless yodeling) and Zauren by the Sennen, and the Appenzeller Sennenhund (Bläss) keeping the herd together. Roadside hospitality includes 'usekhäbed' — drinks offered to the passing procession. The season runs mid-May to end of June, with dates announced short-notice depending on grass growth and weather.

This celebration benefits from careful observation, local guidance, and respect for community boundaries.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
Avoid filming or photographing moments that feel private, sacred, or restricted.
Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
