Each May, the Catalan city of Lleida gathers by the thousands to cook and eat snails for the three-day Aplec del Caragol. Friends band into meal groups called collas, and between the feasts come human towers, sardana dances, and music, in a joyful celebration of a humble dish at the heart of rural Catalan cooking.
