On St. John's Eve, the towns of Andorra light up with the Falles, a fiery midsummer tradition. Torchbearers called fallaires whirl great flaming torches down the village streets to kindle bonfires, in an ancient rite of purification welcoming the high summer sun on the shortest night of the year.
