Each May 21 to 23, the village of Mavrolefki near Drama keeps the Anastenaria for Saints Constantine and Helen. Fire-walking and worship fill the three days, in a celebration revived by Thracian refugee families that joins faith to the awe of dancing upon the fire.
Revived in the 20th century by Thracian refugee families, Mavrolefki’s Anastenaria are framed as communal devotion and healing ritual. It is one of only a few villages preserving this Balkan tradition. Activities occur at the village church’s wood chapel and nearby clearing, reinforcing local bonds. Outsiders attend chiefly as respectful spectators to witness this rare custom.
Observe quietly and let the ritual unfold without interference. No special costume required, but maintain decorum near the church.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
