Almiruete Carnival

Carnaval de Almiruete

Almiruete, Spain

Feb 14, 2026ConfirmedSource

Each Carnival Saturday, the mountain village of Almiruete in Guadalajara fills with its strange and ancient masked figures, the horned botargas and the mascaritas. Their wild costumes carry on the old customs of the Sierra Norte, in a rural carnival that locals hold as the heart of their identity.

How we decide

Key moments

Face reveal and celebration

At the plaza, the participants unmask (symbolizing the ritual’s completion) and the Botargas proceed to share wine from a traditional jug (botijo) with all present. A fertility “rain” of reed fluff and confetti falls on the audience.

Botargas begin descent

Villagers and visitors gather in the village to hear the horn blow and watch as masked men (Botargas) descend with bells on their belts.

Mascaritas join parade

Spectators see the Botargas run through cobbled streets to find the Mascaritas; together the couples loop around the plaza throwing confetti and plant fluff onto the crowd.
