On the first two days of November, Lithuanians go to the cemeteries to remember the people they have lost, lighting thousands of small candles on the graves. As night falls the graveyards glow with warm light, a quiet and beautiful custom that reaches back to old pre-Christian autumn rites for the dead.

In Catholic Lithuania, ancestral days in early November have deep roots in pagan 'Dziady' rituals. Once baptized (1387), Lithuania merged these customs with Christian All Saints observance. This blend reflects Lithuania’s tender relationship with the dead.
