On the night of June 23, the Galician port city of A Coruña lights up with the fires of San Xoán to mark the summer solstice. Bonfires rise on the beaches and in the neighborhoods, and people gather around the flames late into the night, in a tradition that goes back to old Celtic midsummer rites.

Bonfire lighting (Praias de Riazor e Orzán)

Visitors gather around large flankes fires, dancing and jumping across embers for luck, often while traditional music is played. As the clock strikes midnight, the biggest bonfires are ignited on the beach.

Burning of the curse effigy ('Meco')

At midnight, a straw effigy (the "meco") is thrown into the flames. The firelight and fireworks create a dramatic scene, reinforcing the sense of renewal. Attendees may join in the finale by uttering traditional incantations.

Locals and visitors follow costumed participants through the city, witnessing traditional dances and story-telling. It showcases Galician mythology and folklore.
