According to legend recounted by Pope Gregory the Great, after Saint Paolino ransomed his fellow citizens from captivity in the 12th century, the grateful Nola populace welcomed him back with floral towers. Over time, each tower became a gigantic obelisk called a "Giglio" placed on chariots for procession.
