Sochos Carnival "Meriou"Καρναβάλι Σοχού «Μέριου»

Sochos (Thessaloniki, Greece) hosts an annual pre-Lenten carnival known as the “Meriou”, featuring the legendary Koudounoforoi (bell-bearers). During the festivities villagers (about 3,000) don goatskins and large bells, filling the streets with deafening sounds as part of a Dionysian fertility celebration 1.
