Babougera of VamvakofytoΜπαμπούγερα Βαμβακοφύτου

The Vamvakofyto Babougera is a traditional Carnival (Apokries) event held in the village of Vamvakofyto, Serres. Men and women don ragged costumes and cowbells, parading in masks to chase away evil spirits. It is noted as one of Greece’s oldest traditional carnivals, with origins in ancient Dionysian celebrations 1. The highlight is a satirical wedding ceremony on Carnival Sunday, featuring wild dancing and costumes.

Stemming from ancient rural winter customs, Babougera reinforces local identity by celebrating agrarian and Dionysian heritage. It was recently recognized in Greece’s intangible cultural heritage list, reflecting its community importance.
