One of the grandest festal celebrations on Holy Mount Athos, the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos is celebrated at the Serbian Hilandar Monastery each year. Pilgrims gather from Greece, Serbia, and beyond to participate in the solemn eve’s Vigil and the dawn Divine Liturgy in the Katholikon (main church). After communion, all share in the traditional ‘Table of Love’ meal, reflecting the monastery’s centuries-old hospitality.
Hilandar Monastery stands as a heart of Serbian Orthodoxy on Athos. The feast honors the Virgin Mary’s entry into the Jerusalem Temple (November 21 Julian), a moment deeply embedded in Orthodox liturgical tradition. Local Athonite custom involves elaborate liturgical rites and flags, and the decoration with laurel, symbolizing purification and thanksgiving to the Theotokos, who is considered the heavenly protector of the monastic state.
