The Russian (Rossikon) Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, on the southwestern shore of Athos, celebrates the feast of its patron Saint Panteleimon on July 27 (Julian calendar) with great ceremony 1. The two-day observance opens with a festive evening vigil and continues next morning with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy led by the abbot and visiting hierarchs 1. The atmosphere is described as “Byzantine splendor” – massive churches decked in lit lights, choir chanting in Greek and Slavonic, and pilgrims gathering in prayer. Attendees venerate the ikon of St Panteleimon and receive blessings in the monastic refectory feast. The pilgrimage is particularly beloved by Orthodox from Russia and Greece (though still male-only).
