Phallephoria (Greek: Φαλληφόρια) is a revived Ancient Greek Dionysian carnival procession held in Athens. Participants dressed as satyrs, maenads, sileni and other revelers carry traditional phallic symbols through the streets of Plaka and the historic city center 1 2. Street musicians play bacchanalian tunes (pipes, percussion), and the troupe sings satirical songs and dances. The event re-enacts the ancient Phallic Procession, a festive part of the Dionysia honored in antiquity 3 4. It begins on the steps of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and winds through Plaka, the Roman Agora area, Monastiraki, and Psyrri, culminating at Thiseio 2 5, bridging classical tradition and modern carnival.

Phallephoria takes place during the Greek Carnival season (Apokries) in Athens, explicitly linking the festivities to ancient Dionysian rituals. In antiquity, the Phallika procession was part of the Dionysia in honor of Dionysus, and it gave rise to Greek comedy 1 2. The modern event emphasizes this heritage: according to tourism authorities it is the “ancestor of comedy” and part of Carnival custom 3 2.
