Bellinzona Rabadan Carnival
Rabadan is the largest carnival in Italian-speaking Switzerland (~150,000 annual visitors), documented as founded on 7 February 1862 by the Società dell'osso — NOT medieval, despite common tourism claims. The name comes from the Lombard word 'rabbadàn' (noise/chiasso), first officially used in 1871. The carnival follows the Roman rite calendar (Giovedì Grasso to Martedì Grasso) and distributes risotto e luganighe (local sausages) on the final Tuesday. The Società Carnevalesca Rabadan organizes and publishes the program on rabadan.ch.
