Montjuïc Castle
Montjuïc Castle overlooking Barcelona's harbor was the military fortress that bombarded the city during the 1714 siege and later served as a political prison where Lluís Companys (Catalan president) was executed in 1940. The Ajuntament de Barcelona now manages the castle as a public space; it has been reinterpreted as a site of democratic memory. The castle's Interpretation Center documents its role in the 1714 siege and the Franco-era repression.
