Arad City Center
Arad's pedestrian city center showcases a multi-ethnic architectural palimpsest—Serbian Orthodox church, Roman Catholic cathedral (Eclectic style), Reformed church, and the Arad Casino—reflecting the Habsburg-era coexistence of Hungarian, German, Serbian, Romanian, and Jewish communities. The 1848 Statue of Liberty and the Administrative Palace anchor the national-memory layer. This is where Crișana's second city reveals its layered identity most legibly. Beiuș
Beiuș (Belényes) sits at the foot of the Apuseni Mountains and has been a Romanian-language learning center since the late 18th century—a continuity vault for Romanian Orthodox village culture in Bihor. It is the primary hub for the Țurca winter customs: the Bihor-specific goat dance with its red-body mask, rabbit-fur back, birău conductor, Verjel couple-matching, and Bulciuc end-of-caroling celebration. The 'Gusturi și Tradiții de Bihor' event is held here annually. Greek Catholic Church of Oradea
The restored seat of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Oradea Mare—suppressed in 1948 when all seven bishops were arrested and Bishop Frentiu died in prison. For 41 years, Greek Catholic worship survived only underground. After 1989, the eparchy was restored but many properties remain in Orthodox hands, creating contested patrimony across Bihor villages. This site is the institutional anchor for understanding hidden Greek Catholic layers in villages that now appear Orthodox. Visit the restored Greek Catholic church; learn about the 1948 suppression and underground survival; many village churches in Bihor still have contested dual Greek Catholic/Orthodox identity
Muzeul Țării Crișurilor
The regional museum complex in Oradea—housed in the Baroque Palace—holds the definitive archaeological, ethnographic, and folk-art collections for the Crișana region. Its Crisia journal publishes local historical research, and its archaeology department documents pre-Roman, Roman, and medieval finds from Bihor County. This is the signal anchor for discovering what's happening in Crișana heritage: exhibition schedules, journal publications, and research reports. Oradea Fortress
The pentagonal star-fortress at Oradea's heart—successively a medieval citadel, an Ottoman provincial capital (1660-1692), and a Habsburg military installation—is now a restored cultural complex hosting museums, artisan workshops, restaurants, and the annual Medieval Festival (July). Walk the bastions and read five centuries of frontier history in the walls. Szent László Square
The square in front of the St. Ladislaus Church—named after the medieval cult that made Oradea a European pilgrimage destination—now hosts the Oradea Advent Fair (Târgul de Advent) each December. This is the clearest example of institutional adoption: a medieval Catholic procession site repurposed for a modern urban festival, still bearing the saint's name in both Romanian and Hungarian.
