D'r Joep Statue
Standing on Kerkrade's Markt since 1957, this bronze statue of a miner (D'r Joep) is the most visible memorial to the koempel era — proposed in 1939 by Jean Hermans, son of a miner killed in the mines. It serves as a pilgrimage-like site for former mining families and a focal point for mining memory in the Parkstad region.
