Gëlle Fra Monument
The Gëlle Fra (Golden Lady) — a 3.3-metre gilded statue of an angel of peace holding a laurel wreath atop an obelisk — was erected in 1923 on Constitution Square to honor Luxembourgish volunteers who died in WWI. Dismantled by the Nazis during the occupation and restored after the war, it has become the focal point for National Day ceremonies: the military parade passes it, and the Fakelzuch (torchlight procession) on 22 June evening flows past it. The monument's destruction and restoration mirror Luxembourg's own experience of annexation and liberation.
