Freedom Monument
Riga's primary symbol of Latvian independence—a 42-meter memorial unveiled in 1935, funded by public donations, honoring soldiers killed in the War of Independence (1918–1920). The figure of Liberty (Brīvība) holding three stars (representing Latvia's historical regions) stood as the totem of sovereignty even when Soviet authorities forbade laying flowers at its base. Today it is the traditional endpoint of national processions and the site where the national anthem is sung at state occasions. Its continued visibility across regime changes makes it a unique marker of how national memory persists through occupation.
