Freiburg im Breisgau Old Town
Founded in 1120 by the Zähringer dukes as a planned market town at the Black Forest edge, Freiburg's street grid, Münsterplatz, and Bächle (pavement streams) still embody the Zähringer urban model. The Schlossberg above the town preserves castle ruins from the Zähringer and subsequent Counts of Freiburg. The city became the gateway to the Black Forest and a Catholic stronghold that preserved Fasnet.
