Site of the Battle of Castillon (17 July 1453), the final engagement of the Hundred Years' War where French cannon fire ended English continental rule in Aquitaine. The battlefield is marked and an annual re-enactment brings the Plantagenet-Valois conflict to life. This is where the medieval duchy ended and French royal administration began.
