Basilica of Saint-Denis
The Merovingian dynastic necropolis and one of the oldest Christian pilgrimage sites in Île-de-France. Saint Denis's relics drew pilgrims and commerce (the Foire du Lendit was chartered here in 1053). The annual feast of Saint Denis (October 9) is still observed. The basilica is maintained by the Centre des monuments nationaux and the diocese; its recumbent royal effigies and Gothic architecture make the Merovingian-Carolingian sacral kingship layer vividly legible.
