An iconic winter wine festival held annually in Mukachevo before the Old New Year (St. Basil’s Day). Dozens of local winemakers present their wines in a festive market atmosphere. Caroling and folk music groups from the region perform, and visitors can taste traditional Transcarpathian dishes by outdoor fire. The event showcases authentic winemaking traditions of the Rusyn/Hungarian communities in the region.
The festival grew out of the longstanding regional tradition of home winemaking and New Year celebrations. Families would gather to make wine over the autumn and display it around St. Basil’s Day (January 14), an ancient feast marking the new year in local custom. The event also includes nativity carols and blessings, linking it to Orthodox Christian and folk heritage.
