The 'Zhovten u Zhovtni' (October in October) festival is an annual 10-day cultural program held each late October in Zhytomyr, centered around the historic Zhovten movie theater. A key modern art event in the city, it features conferences on cultural identity, film screenings, performances, and exhibitions. It marks a transformation of a Soviet-era cinema into a contemporary cultural hub.
Zhytomyr has used the redevelopment of the old Zhovten cinema as a catalyst for creative events. This festival was conceived to engage the public in cultural discussions and arts over an extended period each autumn. It reflects the city’s effort to preserve historical venues by giving them new cultural purposes rather than demolition.
