The Volodymyr-Volynskyi Ivan Kupala celebration is a community-organized event held on the night of 6–7 July, traditionally on the city beach by the Luga River 1 2. Organized by the city Department of Culture, festival participants (mostly locals) dress in folk costume, weave flower wreaths and sing traditional songs. The festivities include a theatrical performance with mythic characters, folk music by regional ensembles, and culminate in the lighting of a Kupala bonfire on the riverbank 1. The climax of the celebration is leapfrogging over the flames by young couples, symbolizing fertility and conjugal fidelity (a ritual marking hopeful partnerships) 2 1.
This event is part of a broader Ukrainian mid-summer tradition merging Christian and pagan heritage. In the Volhynia region, Kupala night customs center on fire, water, and love magic. Girls float wreaths on the river to divine their future, and young people build effigies (e.g. straw Marena) to burn as part of the rite of renewal 1 2.
