The Palio delle Balestre Grandi is San Marino’s annual crossbow tournament held on September 3 at the historic Crossbowmen’s Quarry (Cava dei Balestrieri) 1. Nine teams (each representing a “castello”/district) in medieval costume compete in traditional fashion. The event reenacts an ancient practice: records date it to at least 1537, and after a long suspension the contest was revived in 1956 by the San Marino Crossbowmen’s Federation 1 2. It is the centerpiece of the Republic’s founder’s day celebrations, culminating in the crowning of a champion archer and the “King of the Crossbow” before the Captains Regent 3 1.
Crossbow shooting has been part of San Marino’s martial heritage since medieval times. Historically, statutes (Statuti) from the 14th and 16th centuries codified the Palio as a training contest for militiamen to defend the republic’s walls and independence 1 2. The modern festival honors this legacy by dressing participants in period garments and invoking the civic spirit of the long-ago republic.
