Kurentovanje is the largest traditional carnival in Ptuj (Podravska, Štajerska), featuring costumed Kurents and an array of folk parades. It is inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage 1 2. Throughout the festival, locals in shaggy costumes and masks chase away winter with bells and dances. Highlights include daytime folklore processions (povorkas) and evening masked balls, creating an immersive folk experience 2 3.
Kurentovanje stems from ancient Slavic rites of spring. Every winter, Kurent figures appear to ‘chase away evil and winter’; UNESCO notes the Kurent processions as intangible heritage of humanity 1. The event turns Ptuj into a living ethnographic museum, celebrating the region’s rural folklore and carnival customs.
