The Cerknica Carnival (Cerkniški pust) is one of Slovenia's largest and most famous carnival celebrations, featuring elaborate masks, folklore parades, and traditional dishes (like 'pustni krofi' – carnival doughnuts). The whole town joins in the festivities, preserving ancient customs of pre-Lenten merriment. Visitors can witness costumed character processions and join the street parties in lively local tradition.
Cerknica’s carnival has deep roots in regional folklore, drawing on centuries-old traditions of mask-making and folk theater. It is tied to pagan pre-Lenten celebrations, with influences from various Slavic and Alpine mask customs. The large groups of wooden or papier-mâché figures ('škoromati') are unique to this region.
