Belgrade’s patronal feast is celebrated on the Orthodox Ascension Day (Savior’s Day, Спасовдан), with a grand liturgy and city procession (литургија и литија) 1. Every year believers gather in the Church of the Ascension in downtown Belgrade for morning mass, followed by a ritual procession of the Patriarch and clergy with holy relics through the city streets, ending at the Temple of Saint Sava 1 2. Thousands of faithful attend rain or shine, carrying icons and crosses, to honor Saint Sava and pray for the city’s well-being.
The Ascension of Christ is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church. In 1403, Despot Stefan Lazarević declared Belgrade’s patron saint to be the Ascension (Savior’s Day) – symbolizing the city’s rise 1. The modern procession tradition has roots in an 1862 blessing parade. After a long hiatus, it was revived in the 1990s under Patriarch Pavle. It is now a major public religious festival involving church and state dignitaries 1 2.
