Cantar as Janeiras is Porto’s annual folk-music tradition for welcoming the new year. On the first Saturday of January (here, 3 January 2026, 15:00–18:00) multiple local folklore groups parade through historic downtown routes (via Terreiro da Sé, Liberdade, Aliados, etc.) singing Janeyra carols to celebrate the New Year 1 2. The celebration cumulates at the centerpiece Espelho D’Água (Praça General Humberto Delgado) where all groups converge for a grand finale 1 3. It is one of Porto’s oldest and most cherished popular traditions 1.
The event is rooted in the Portuguese Janeiras tradition of singing Epiphany carols in January. Historically this custom involved groups of neighbors going door-to-door for treats (nuts, sweets, wine) at the end of the Christmas season 1 2. In Porto today the custom takes the form of organized street performances by folklore ensembles, reflecting the communal and Catholic heritage of the season.
