Traditional Epiphany singing procession in Rebordaínhos (Vinhais) held on the first weekend of January. Unique to this village, a group of carolers and one careto go house-to-house during daylight on Jan 6 (Three Kings Day), singing ritual verse (cantar dos reis) and collecting gifts. Unlike other villages, the singing is daytime, starting with breakfast at the organizer’s home. The careto leads and collects donations, returning to the churchyard at midday. The celebration includes the distribution of the bread charolo and communal merrymaking. The festival revives medieval magi traditions in a rural context. 1
Part of the Bragãnça winter festival cycle, this streus tradition is an example of how Christianity (Reis Magos Day) was merged with pagan fortune-singing rites. Its distinct daytime caroling sets it apart, reflecting the communal importance of collective singing and camaraderie. The careto’s participation underscores the region’s syncretic folklore. It highlights the role of local leaders ('mordomos') organizing community treasure-giving.
