Festival Colombo transforms the streets of Porto Santo every fall into a living museum commemorating Christopher Columbus’s stay on the island in the Age of Discoveries. For four days in mid-September, local actors in period costume reenact the arrival of Columbus (Cristóvão Colombo) on the island each evening 1. The festival includes medieval workshops, historical street parades, music, traditional dance and artisan markets themed to the 15th century 2. Torrential village courts fill with tents and tableaux of sailors, and nightly theatrical performances simulate Columbus meeting Kingdom governors on the historic beach. The entire community participates, making it a major cultural event on Porto Santo. 3
Drawing on Madeira’s history of Portuguese exploration, this festival celebrates a key local legend that Columbus lived and married on Porto Santo. It highlights the island’s role in the 16th- century discoveries and colonial trade.
