Festa Templária is Tomar’s annual medieval-themed festival celebrating the town’s Templar heritage. Held every July (e.g. 10-13 July 2025) 1, it features historical reenactments, medieval markets, knight encampments at the Convento do Cristo, folk music, craft workshops, and parades where locals dress as Templar knights and nobles. The event is designed to evoke the founding of Tomar by the Knights Templar in the 12th century (founder Gualdim Pais) 2. It has become a community festivity for history enthusiasts. While somewhat attracting regional tourists, it is mainly celebrated by the Tomar community, who see it as an expression of pride in their unique past.
Tomar is famously founded by the Templars in 1160. Festa Templária commemorates this legacy. The organizers include local historical associations and the municipality. Activities (conferences, guided tours, escape-rooms with Templar themes, and authentic medieval cuisine) educate about Tomar’s role in the Crusades and Portuguese foundation mythology 1 2. It reinforces local identity as the "cradle of Portuguese knighthood" and connects contemporary Tomar residents to their origins.
