AgitÁgueda is a summer street art festival transforming Águeda into an open-air art installation. Renowned for its brightly colored umbrella canopy over the main avenue, the festival features live street performances, craft markets, music concerts, and interactive public art for several weeks (July). The whole city becomes a stage with murals, projections, and workshops highlighting local creativity. Since 2008, it attracts both artists and residents to engage in community art projects. The festival won Portuguese National Tourism awards for its authentic local roots.
This festival embodies Águeda’s creative spirit and community participation. Initially started by local artists to rejuvenate the city, it resonates with Portuguese summer street party culture (festas populares) while giving Águeda a distinct visual identity. It emphasizes local traditions of artisanal crafts and environmental awareness (umbrella art recycles old umbrellas). Although modern, it is embraced by generations of inhabitants who treat it as their own street carnival, reflecting Águeda’s pride and innovation.
